Growing evidence indicates a strong association between periodontitis, a chronic oral inflammatory disease, and cardiovascular disease (CVD), a leading cause of global mortality. Both conditions share common risk factors and are interconnected through systemic immune-inflammatory pathways, oxidative stress, and oral microbiome dysbiosis. Research suggests that untreated periodontitis may heighten cardiovascular risk, while periodontal therapy could help reduce systemic inflammation and improve cardiovascular outcomes. These findings emphasize the importance of collaborative strategies between dentistry and medicine to address the overlapping burden of periodontitis and CVD.
