Genital herpes is a chronic, life-long viral infection with a high incidence of recurrence. Genital herpes is the fourth most common STD according to a retrospective study in India with an incidence of 11.4% in a group of 1571 STD patients. Genital herpes was the commonest STD followed by syphilis, condyloma acuminata and others in HIV-infected patients. The social stigma and reduced quality of life associated with genital herpes make it a difficult infection to manage and counsel.
