The mother of an 8-year-old boy presents with concerns that her son keeps saying he wants to be a girl. She states that he has always preferred to participate in ‘feminine’ activities such as playing with dolls, interested in dressing up and playing with makeup. He has been doing well academically but has started having more problems with peers because they tease him about his liking for activities. He much prefers playing with girls but sometimes bothers them because he insists he is one of them.

He has quite a few effeminate mannerisms and he is often seen trying to copy female gaits and swinging his hips. The family had noticed aspects of these behaviors when he was younger but thought he would grow out of it.
