Thymoma is a tumor, which arises in the thymus gland. This gland is situated behind the breast bone just in front of the heart. This organ is located behind the sternum in front of the great vessels; it reaches its maximum weight at puberty and undergoes involution thereafter. A relation between myasthenia gravis (MG) and thymomas is well established. Of patients with a thymoma, one third to one half shows no symptom.
Few of them present with local symptoms related to the tumor's encroachment on surrounding structures such as cough, chest pain, superior vena cava syndrome, dysphagia, and hoarseness of voice if the recurrent laryngeal nerve is involved. Rest of the cases are found incidentally on a radiographic examination during a diferent workup or in the investigation of MG.
