They devised the system after analyzing data from 257 women with gestational diabetes 20 years of follow-up after delivery. The score takes into account four factors- insulin treatment during pregnancy, family history of diabetes, body mass index (BMI) in early pregnancy, and lactation -- that have all been shown in other studies to affect the risk of postpartum diabetes, wrote the authors, who were led by Anette-Gabriele Ziegler, MD, at the Institute of Diabetes Research in Neuherberg, Germany.
