Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) is the leading cause of hospital-associated infections. Critically ill or patients from intensive care unit (ICU) are at the highest risk for this disease due to the prevalence of multiple factors already present in such patients. This article provides an overview of the treatment options and the preventive measures need to be taken to reduce CMI incidence. Overall up to 40% of patients develop diarrhea after admission to the ICU.
Enteral feeding is the most common cause of diarrhea, whereas other causes include hypoalbuminemia, intestinal ischemia and medication-induced diarrhea. Whereas, CDI is the most common cause of diarrhea in the ICU.
