Gout — a complex form of arthritis occurs when urate crystals accumulate in your joint, causing the inflammation and intense pain affecting mostly the joint at the base of the big toe. Drugs called xanthine oxidase inhibitors are often prescribed to the patients which limit the amount of uric acid in the body. However, some individuals are intolerant to xanthine oxidase inhibitors and lesinurad (a urate transporter inhibitor) is suggested for such patients. Recent clinical trials have shown that lesinurad monotherapy (400 mg) does reduce uric acid levels in patients but simultaneously result in adverse renal complications.
Hence, lesinurad monotherapy is not advisable in these patients. What according to you will be the best treatment for gout in patients who are intolerant to xanthine oxidase inhibitors? Source: Anne-Kathrin Tausche, Rieke Alten, Nicola Dalbeth, Jeff Kopicko, Maple…
