The UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention has recently issued a circular advisory on the use of four drugs containing Febuxostat as the active ingredient that is commonly used to treat gout. The circular was issued after the US FDA warned that Febuxostat is associated with an 'increased risk of death' due to cardiac diseases. The ministry has urged concerned authorities to prescribe the medicines only to those patients who are unresponsive to Allopurinol.

Ministry has asked healthcare providers to inform patients about the potential side effects of the drugs. Additionally, it has also asked patients to inform doctors of any heart problems or previously suffered a stroke before they are prescribed with the medicine.
