Autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) is a rare blood condition characterized by reduced red blood cells in the body. In this condition, healthy red blood cells are destroyed more quickly than they are replaced, which causes anemia. Breathlessness, fatigue, tachycardia, chest pain, headache, pale skin are some of the symptoms observed. Blood tests, including raised bilirubin and lactate dehydrogenase levels, direct antiglobulin test (DAT), also known as Coomb’s test, can be used to diagnose AIHA.
Steroids (prednisolone) are the drug of choice for this condition that help slow down the breakdown of red blood cells and are given for a short course of treatment. ##Disclaimer## The content provided on Docplexus is intended for educational purposes only.
