The Immunization Programme in India was introduced in 1978. The program was later expanded in 1985 as the U niversal Immunization Programme (UIP) to cover all districts in the country by 1989-90. Since 1997, immunization activities have also been an essential component of the National Reproductive and Child Health Programme .

They are currently one of the key areas under the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) . Under UIP, seven vaccines for preventable diseases are covered, including diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, polio, measles, severe form of childhood tuberculosis and hepatitis B, hemophilus influenza type b (HIB), and diarrhea.
