Bell's palsy is defined as idiopathic peripheral facial palsy of acute onset. Usually, in the course of disease treatment, we assess the degree of prognosis i.e. recovery from palsy with the use of facial nerve palsy grading. House Brackmann grading , which extends from Grade 1 to 6. Grade 1-2 were regarded as satisfactory recovery and grade 3-6 were considered as non-satisfactory recovery. But this grading differs from person to person as human error can occur in judging the components.

Also, minute changes with treatment can't be assessed with this grading. For an easy judgement of recovery, recently a newer method has been introduced, i.e. by measuring neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR).
