Leishmaniasis is caused by the protozoan Leishmania transmitting through phlebotomine sand flies in tropical and subtropical countries due to unhygienic living conditions, malnutrition, weak immune system, and poor healthcare services. The common forms of leishmaniasis are cutaneous, mucocutaneous, and visceral leishmaniasis. WHO has estimated that between 700,000 and one million leishmaniasis cases occur every year. Among them, 50,000 and 90,000 cases are visceral leishmaniasis, commonly known as kala-azar, which can be fatal if untreated.
