In a bizarre incident, a man who met with an accident was declared brain dead and he was declared dead on the arrest of cardiopulmonary functions and his body sent for post-mortem examination. On autopsy, table pathologist found presence of heartbeat and respiration. The patient was rushed to the hospital for resuscitation where respiratory system showed responding but he remained brain dead.

As per literature, at times, there may be transient arrest of cardiopulmonary functions. This may not be acceptable to attendants. Is there any guidelines for declaring death of brain-dead patients to avoid such type of incidents in future. Kindly share.
