Women may be prescribed hormone-containing medication for a number of indications, such as contraception or postmenopausal hormone replacement therapy. Sometimes blood clots are observed in such women. The scientists checked whether anticoagulants can be prescribed with hormones together. Women of childbearing age with acute deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism (PE) require anticoagulant treatment. The women of this age often require estrogen-containing contraceptives.
However, physicians are often reluctant to prescribe hormones to such patients due to the documented risk of VTE with hormonal agents.
