World Obesity Day is being observed today, March 4, 2026, with a strong focus on childhood obesity. This year’s theme, “8 Billion Reasons to Act on Obesity,” underscores a powerful reality. In a world of more than 8 billion people, the health systems and environments we shape today will determine the long-term well-being of current and future generations. Childhood obesity remains at the forefront of this year’s campaign.

Over the past five decades, prevalence among school-aged children has risen from about 4 percent in 1975 to nearly 20 percent in 2022. The sharpest increases are seen in low- and middle-income countries. Excess weight in childhood frequently persists into adulthood and significantly increases the lifetime risk of noncommunicable diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and certain cancers.
