World Pneumonia Day is observed every year on 12 th November to raise awareness about the condition and advocate for global action in the fight against it. The fight to reduce mortality from pneumonia, the single biggest infectious killer, has never been more urgent. Pneumonia claimed the lives of 2.5 million people, including 672,000 children, in 2019 alone. Initial treatment includes the use of β-lactams and broad-spectrum antibiotics until the causative organism is identified, followed by targeted antibiotic/antiviral therapy.

However, the combined effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and the rising incidence of multidrug-resistant bacteria have complicated the management of this disease, highlighting the need for the development of novel antibiotics.
