A Chennai-based hospital effectively treated a 42-day-old patient suffering from a rare metabolic disorder. The surgery is claimed to be performed on the youngest patient in the country. The patient underwent liver transplant surgery for urea cycle disorder - a type of disorder where the ammonia is not converted into metabolites due to the absence of essential enzymes in the urea cycle, which results in an excessive amount of ammonia in infants. The absence of enzymes occurs due to genetic mutations causing different neurological complications such as: Cerebral edema Anorexia Hyperventilation or hypoventilation Hypothermia Seizures Coma According to the hospital, the boy weighed 3 kg at the time of surgery.
