Surgeons of a city hospital struggled for seven hours to remove a 17.5 kg tumor from a patient’s body, giving him a fresh lease of life. Surgical oncologist Dr. Muralikrishna of Anu Hospital said his patient Arjuna Rao, 38, suffered from rare retroperitoneal soft-tissue sarcoma and underwent a surgery at a corporate hospital in Hyderabad, but the condition recurred. Muralikrishna said the condition was known to recur if surgery was not done properly the first time. Patients afflicted with this type of sarcoma suffer from lack of sleep, nausea, vomiting, stomach ache and loose motions. The 17.5 kg tumor was putting a heavy burden on the heart and kidneys of the patient, he said. Radiotherapy and chemotherapy were not a solution to this form of cancer.
