A previously healthy 32-year-old woman presents with two days of right flank pain radiating to the right groin. She denies any fever, dysuria, urgency or increased frequency of urination, and has no history of nephrolithiasis. A regimen of 220 mg of naproxen twice daily controls her pain quite well and she is taking no other medications.

CT scan by the kidney stone protocol shows a 5-mm calculus at the right ureterovesical junction. Laboratory results Urinalysis: 4-10 red blood cells per high-power field Urine Gram staining and culture: Negative Serum creatinine: 1.0 mg/dL
