A healthy 18-year-old girl, who has been previously fit, presented to the emergency department with a two year history of back pain. Her general practitioner on several occasions gave simple analgesia, which had no effect. The girl denied any previous history of trauma but reported of being a keen dancer for many years. Further questioning about her back pain revealed that she had been having pain in her mid to lower back for the past two years.
She did not report radiating pain to any limbs and denied any muscle weakness, paraesthesia, incontinence or saddle anesthesia.
