Visual impairment is one of the serious co-morbidity faced by diabetes mellitus patients because of the development of cataracts. Interestingly, these complications are more likely to develop in diabetic patients in comparison to non-diabetic ones. A recent study performed on 56,510 diabetes patients has shown Incident rate (IR) of 20.4 per 1000 person-years as compared to IR of 10.8 in patients without diabetes. Interestingly, the Incident rate ratio (IRR) was found highest in the mid-age group patients (45-54 years).
Moreover, IRs found were high in patients around the age of 80 years and risk increases with duration of diabetes in patients. In which age group do you observe cataracts more while treating your diabetes patients ? Source: Eye
