Plastic surgeons at AIIMS Mangalagiri have achieved a landmark milestone in advanced trauma care by successfully performing a highly complex trans-humeral (mid-arm) replantation surgery to reattach a completely amputated arm. The rare microsurgical procedure, carried out on a 25-year-old industrial worker, marks the first surgery of its kind in Andhra Pradesh and highlights the growing capabilities of specialised reconstructive surgery in India. The patient, a mill machine load operator from Jharkhand working with a road construction company, sustained a catastrophic crush injury when his left arm was caught in a tar machine near Hanuman Junction, close to Vijayawada, on February 22.
