Airway stenosis is the narrowing of the airway affecting the larynx, trachea, and its adjoining areas thereby disrupting breathing and speech. It is generally caused by airway damage, congenital anomalies,  malignant and benign tumors, endotracheal intubation, tracheostomy, or autoimmune illnesses. The likelihood of developing tracheal stenosis is determined by the source of tracheal constriction. Damage to the airway during intubation is frequent, although the chance of symptomatic stenosis is low. One of the earliest indications of granulomatosis with polyangiitis is tracheal stenosis.

About 20% of the time, stenosis can occur. Congenital tracheal stenosis is rare; 2 out of 100,000 infants are diagnosed with it.
