Errors on memory and thinking tests may signal Alzheimer up to 18 years before the disease can actually be diagnosed. According to Rush University Medical Centre's, Kumar B Rajan said “changes in thinking and memory that precede obvious symptoms of Alzheimer's disease begin decades before.” He added that for now scientists cannot detect such changes in individuals at risk but they were able to detect them amongst a group of individuals who eventually developed Dementia due to Alzheimer's.

According to the tests done on the group, 13 to 18 years before the final assessments took place, one unit lower in performance of the standardised cognitive test score was associated with an 85 percent greater risk (relative risk of 1.85) of future dementia.
