Overview Sacrococcygeal teratoma is a rare tumor that develops at the base of the coccyx, known as the sacrococcygeal region. The majority of sacrococcygeal teratomas are congenital. They are diagnosed prenatally by a routine ultrasound examination. Most of these tumors are non-malignant; however, they may become malignant if not removed surgically. Epidemiology Prevalence - 1 in 30,000 - 70,000 live births Female: male ratio is 4:1 Malignancy is seen most commonly in males. It is the most common solid tumor seen in neonates.
The sacrococcygeal region is the most common site for a teratoma in neonates. Sacrococcygeal teratoma rarely affects adults.
