Iron deficiency is highly prevalent in India. Hb less than 13.5 gram/100ml in males and Hb less than 12.0 gram/100ml of blood in women is considered as anemic. Women sustain a constant loss of iron through repetitive reproductive cycle, lactation, menstrual blood loss, micronutrients scarcity, etc. Anemia progresses through different stages: Pre-latent or storage iron deficiency Latent iron deficiency Iron deficiency anemia Awareness among patients is one of the keys to prevent anemia. However, awareness should not be centric to the problem of iron deficiency but should also be addressed with deficiencies of other micronutrients such as vitamin B12 and folic acid, which are related to anemia.
