Paltauf’s hemorrhage is a shining pale pink or bluish-red patch usually observed on the anterior surface and margins of the lower lobes of the lung. It was first described in 1888 by Arnold Paltauf, an Austrian medical professor. The hemorrhage results from effused blood arising due to rupture of intra-alveolar vessel walls caused by forced expiration. The lungs appear edematous and boggy.
