Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a multifactorial disease that includes superficial and deep vein thrombosis of the leg or pelvis and pulmonary embolism (PE). 1 VTE is often associated with reduced survival, high recurrence, and hence substantial healthcare burden. 25–40% of the VTE occurrences are idiopathic, making its diagnosis and prevention a challenge. 1 Panelists put together by the American College of Chest Physicians have updated the CHEST guidelines and evidence-based expert panel report on antithrombotic therapy for treating venous thromboembolism in adults.
