Surgery is warranted in cases of chronic ear diseases that are unresponsive to topical and/or systemic medical therapy. The age, general physical condition, fitness for general anesthesia, and comorbidities in the patient must be taken into account while planning surgery. ## Indications and contraindications ## The general indications for surgery include persistent perforation, otorrhea persisting beyond 6 weeks despite pharmacotherapy, cholesteatoma formation, radiographic evidence of chronic mastoiditis, and conductive hearing loss.
