Since its synthesis over 150 years ago, aspirin has been one of the most widely used medicines in the history of modern pharmaceutical industry. Its antiplatelet (and antiatherogenic) property (discovered in 1970s), led to its use as a prophylactic agent in preventing Cardio Vascular Disease (CVD). While it has well established beneficial role in secondary prevention of CVD (in patients who already have established CVD), its role in primary prevention (in patients who do not have established CVD) has been less conclusive. However, in the last few months, several large clinical studies involving thousands of participants have been published examining the role of aspirin in primary prevention of CVD.
