General Medicine is a branch of medicine focused on the diagnosis and nonsurgical treatment of diseases affecting internal organs, particularly in adults. It encompasses the prevention, diagnosis, and management of adult diseases. Physicians specializing in this field are known as internists, or simply as physicians in Commonwealth nations. Internists are adept at managing patients with complex, undifferentiated, or multi-system disease processes.
They provide care for both hospitalized and ambulatory patients and often contribute significantly to teaching and research. Since general medicine frequently involves seriously ill patients or complex diagnostic investigations, much of an internist's work is hospital-based.
