Atopic eczema (AE), a chronic inflammatory skin condition linked to significant psychological and physical burden, has been associated with an increased risk of suicidal ideation; however, the underlying determinants remain underexplored. To address this gap, an international study assessed the prevalence and key risk factors of suicidal thoughts among individuals with AE compared with matched controls, involving 30,801 adults across 27 countries. The study found that adults with atopic eczema (AE) had a 55% higher prevalence of suicidal ideation compared to those without AE.
Younger adults under 30 and individuals with obesity showed notably elevated risk, while moderate-to-severe AE doubled the odds of suicidal thoughts.
