Blood type O is generally associated with increased blood loss in various surgical procedures. The new study suggests that this is not true in the case of spine surgery. Individuals with blood group O have been found to more susceptible for the blood loss in surgeries. The increased loss can be attributed to the low levels of Factor VIII/ van Willebrand factor (vWF), in the blood group O. Factor VIII is also commonly known as a clotting factor.

It is well established that vWF is a specific carrier of Factor VIII in plasma and protects it from protecting it from proteolytic degradation.
