According to a study conducted in Switzerland, paraplegics who have sustained cervical spinal cord injuries many years ago can now walk with the aid of crutches or a walker. This has been made possible with the new rehabilitation protocols that combine targeted electrical stimulation of the lumbar spinal cord and weight-assisted therapy. Researchers have described a treatment which involves electrical stimulation of the spinal cord and physical therapy to treat paraplegics. The basis of this clinical trial was the decade-long animal studies which were done using this protocol.

The study, called STIMO (STImulation Movement Overground) , has established a new therapeutic framework to improve recovery from spinal cord injury.
