A study declared that preterm neonates exposed to caffeine, within the first seven days after birth may reduce the incidence and severity of acute kidney injuries. Neonatal Acute kidney injury is associated with morbidity, mortality, increased hospital stays and medical expenses. The findings of the study,  Neonatal Kidney Collaborative's Assessment of Worldwide Acute Kidney Injury Epidemiology in Neonates,  declared that neonatal acute kidney injury is found to occur in at least one among the four preterm neonates.

This cohort study was conducted on 675 preterm neonates, born at less than 33 weeks of gestation period. It was determined that only 11.2% of neonates developed acute kidney injury after treatment with caffeine, whereas initially, 31.6% of neonates were prone to this disease.
