Acetaminophen benefits sepsis, especially by inhibiting cell-free hemoglobin-induced lipid and other substrate oxidation. Now, a clinical trial examined whether acetaminophen increases the number of days alive and free of organ support among 447 adult patients with sepsis and circulatory or respiratory organ dysfunction. In the trial, intravenous infusion of acetaminophen for five days was found to be safe for sepsis patients. However, acetaminophen did not significantly improve the number of days alive and free of organ support among critically ill patients compared to placebo (20.2 vs.
19.6 days). Nevertheless, acetaminophen significantly lowered the development rate of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) compared to the placebo (2.2% vs. 8.5%). Furthermore, acetaminophen significantly reduced the total, respiratory, and coagulation Sequential Organ Failure Assessment scores.โฆ
