Researchers at the Weizmann Institute of Science recently revealed that bacteria could reside inside cancer cells. Studying the association between the bacteria and cancer cells may open a new avenue of treatment or augment the action of anticancer treatments. During the research, thousands of tumor samples of different human cancers were studied. The study revealed that bacteria could inhabit cells of all types of cancer viz.
brain, bone, breast, lung, ovary, pancreas, colorectal, and melanoma. It was also revealed that a unique population of bacteria resided in each type of cancer; interestingly, breast cancer cells were found to shelter the most significant number and diversity of bacteria.
