Cataract is the single-leading cause of blindness in worldwide and accounts for nearly 47.9% of the total burden of vision impairment in the India, despite the progress made in surgical interventions during the last decade. Therefore, early identification of cataract and appropriate surgical intervention plays a crucial role in avoiding the morbidity and mortality associated with it. In a recent prospective cohort study of 74,044 participants of the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) with cataract, investigators identified that cataract surgery was associated with reduced risk for all-cause mortality and mortality associated with comorbid noncommunicable diseases and communicable diseases. Out of 74 044 women with cataract in the WHI, 41,735 had undergone cataract surgery.
