The Indian Government is considering the development of a comprehensive national regulatory and patient safety framework for dental implants, implant biomaterials, artificial teeth, and related implant systems in India. The proposal follows concerns raised in Parliament regarding the absence of a uniform safety and quality framework governing the manufacture, sale, and clinical application of dental implant systems. In response, the Cabinet Secretariat has asked the Department of Health Research (DHR) to take appropriate action.
The proposal highlights that dental implants are increasingly being used not only for replacement of missing teeth but also in oral cancer rehabilitation, facial reconstruction, and other complex medical procedures.
