Parents of a one-month-old infant in Chennai brought her to a dermatologist complaining of black patches on her nose. The doctor diagnosed the infant with “black nose disease,” a newly reported symptom of chikungunya. The infant’s mother contracted chikungunya shortly before giving birth. She experienced fever and joint pain for five to six days. The parents noticed dark spots on the infant’s nose two weeks after birth.

Following the diagnosis of black nose disease, the dermatologist treated the infant with a moisturizer since her condition was mild. The black nose disease is characterized by macular or speckled hyperpigmentation that typically develops after the chikungunya fever phase.
