Surgeons in Chennai have successfully repaired a rare case of Amyand’s hernia in a premature baby boy, born at 28 weeks, on the 23rd day after his birth. Although neonatal hernias are relatively common among preterm infants, Amyand’s hernia occurs in only about 0.42% of these infants. Complicating matters further, the baby had a perforated appendix, a condition seen in just 0.1% of Amyand’s hernia cases. The surgical team performed the surgery in three stages, including examination and access of the groin area, appendectomy, and herniotomy.
Post-surgery, the baby was transferred to the NICU for proper recovery. One of the surgeons involved noted that performing surgery on premature infants is particularly challenging due to their underdeveloped airways, which complicates anesthesia administration.
