According to the recent epidemiological data, COPD will be the third leading cause of death by 2020. Many patients with COPD often develop acute exacerbation and require admission to intensive care units. Notably, only about half of COPD cases are of bacterial origin; nonetheless, COPD patients with an acute exacerbation are initiated on antibiotics without any clear high-quality evidence of improved patient outcome.
