Type 1 Diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is a condition where there is very little or even no production of insulin. T1DM results from a cell-mediated autoimmune attack against pancreatic beta cells. The gold standard for such a case till date remains to be the exogenous administration of insulin leading to insulin dependency. This article discusses a clinical trial published in Journal of the American Medical Association where use of stem cell (SCs) along with immunosuppressants have resulted in exogenous insulin dependency.
