Zinc plays a structural role in protein synthesis and a functional role in enzyme catalysis. In addition, it is required for immune function, cell growth, and DNA synthesis. The recommended dietary intake of zinc is 8 mg/day for adult females and 11 mg/day for adult males, whereas, for infants and children, it is needed in an increasing dose from 2 mg/day, depending on the age.

Pregnant and lactating women require a higher amount of zinc. Zinc deficiency can be acquired or even inherited. Source: NIH Fact sheet, Britannica
