Detrusor under activity , or underactive bladder (UAB), is a contraction of reduced strength and/or duration resulting in prolonged bladder emptying and/or a failure to achieve complete bladder emptying within a normal time span. UAB can be observed in many neurologic conditions and myogenic failure. Proper management is focused on prevention of upper tract damage, avoidance of overdistension, and reduction of residual urine. Urologists treat patients with UAB but there is no consensus for its definition.
Patients with UAB have a diminished sense of when the bladder is full and are not able to contract the muscles sufficiently, resulting in incomplete bladder emptying. Some of the established causes of UAB include neurogenic, myogenic, aging, and medication side effects.
