August Bier is credited to perform the first spinal anesthetic surgery. Recognized as the father of spinal and intravenous regional neural blockade, August Bier had a tremendous impact on in the field of anesthesiology and surgery. August Bier was born on November 24, 1861 in Helsen, Germany. Biers earliest work on spinal anesthesia was published in April, 1899 during which he reported six patients who underwent spinal anesthesia for surgical procedures.
He performed first procedure on August 16, 1898 by using 5 and 15 mg of cocaine (either 0.5% or 1.0%). All patients had adequate surgical anesthesia. From this study, Bier proved that successful surgical anesthesia could be provided with subarachnoid cocaine.
