An acute episode of asthma is managed in the casualty. Injection aminophylline is given slow IV, while nebulized salbutamol is given for 15 minutes. Relief is seen in five to ten minutes. The injection takes effect by this time. A dose of betamethasone is given to last for a 24-hour period.

The patient is advised to avoid allergens, aggravating factors and take medications as prescribed. The patient is taught to breathe out (exhale) slowly, to prevent increased intra-thoracic pressure causing collapse of bronchioles. I believe that intubation and positive pressure ventilation is contraindicated in acute asthma since it causes deterioration in the condition. What is the pathophysiolggy and morbidity of CPAP in a case of Asthma?
