Cyclic vomiting syndrome (CVS) is an idiopathic vomiting disorder that is increasingly recognized in adults. An improved understanding of this disorder has resulted in pathophysiologic associations with migraines, mitochondrial dysfunction, and neuroendocrine abnormalities. This article provides an overview of this rare disorder. CVS is a disorder of unknown etiology and pathogenesis that is typically characterized by recurrent episodes of vomiting. Classically perceived as a pediatric disorder, CVS is now receiving greater recognition in the adult population too.
The disorder is misdiagnosed as gastroenteritis, gastroesophageal reflux, food poisoning, recurrent flu, or eating disorders.
