Approximately 15% of diabetics will develop a foot ulcer at some point in their lives due to peripheral arterial disease and/or sensory neuropathy. Amputation is the most serious risk for such patients, and approximately 25-50 % of diabetic patients have their limbs amputated due to infection at the time of their first appointment. In recent years, medical advances have improved our understanding of diabetic foot pathophysiology, and diabetic foot surgery is now regarded as one of the most important aspects of treatment.
