Diabetic mastopathy is an uncommon occurrence of lymphocytic mastitis and stromal fibrosis in patients having long-standing diabetes. It manifests as fibrous masses of the breast. This article briefly overviews clinical presentation, diagnostic criteria, and management of diabetic mastopathy. Diabetic mastopathy was first described by Khardori and Soler in 1984 as a sequence of clinical, radiological, and histopathological features found in dense masses of the breast. It constitutes less than 1% of benign breast lesions.
This disease is associated with type 1 insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus [IDDM] as well as type 2 diabetes mellitus. The radiological and clinical appearances of the condition raise suspicion of malignancy.
